The setting
Squirrels Childminding, East Butterleigh, is situated in Acorn Lodge, a property we had built in our garden for my mother-in-law. This enabled her to live independently but safely, with us close by to help. Sadly, her needs became too great and she moved to a fantastic nursing home, leaving Acorn Lodge empty and without purpose. A year or so later, I was considering stepping back from full time work but I definitely wasn't ready, or old enough, to retire. One day when I was sitting on the Lodge decking, admiring the view, I thought about how much children would love the space and the germ of an idea began to form..

Space to play
Our dedicated garden space is an ever-changing, lively place with room to run and kick a ball, race around on the balance bikes or ride imaginary ponies over a jumping course. There are also quieter corners for digging and planting as well shady spots for looking at books or just chatting with friends.

The decking is an extension of the inside play space and also a great viewing platform from which to watch the neighbouring livestock and the tractors rumbling across the fields, as well as to wave at the low flying Atlas aircraft!

The Lodge's bright interior offers two play rooms that support a wide range of activities and interests. There is space for messy play where the children can freely explore paint, use play-dough and other creative materials, alongside a cosy home corner that encourages role play and dressing up.
Another room allows space for construction and puzzles as well as providing a comfortable area for us to come together to read books or watch a favourite TV programme.
